History and Contents:
Congress authorized in 1816 the publication of a list of all federal employees every two years. The list was published in book form titled Register of Officers and Agents, Civil, Military, and Naval, in the Service of the United States. There are 77 volumes of registers ranging from 1863 to 1959 in the collection. The Registers provide the name of each government employee, the office held, where employed, where born, whence appointed, and pay received, as well as information regarding the Navy, such as names and conditions of all ships and vessels belonging to the United States and when and where they were built.

The entire collection has been captured on 6 microfilms. Only 6 copies of that set of 6 microfilms have been made. THFFI has one set, contributed by Richard W. Hungerford, Jr.
