John Hungerford Arkwright (EN912) sent his mother Sarah (Hoskyns) Arkwright (EN806d) this letter as a young man in 1846.

The text:

My dear Mamma

I suppose you will excuse a long letter as I am in a great hurry.  I guess this small tin parcel will reach you, just about reading time, and I dare say there will be a short pause to view this beautiful orchid which I send you with best love to add to your flower stock.  It is an American one, and I bought it some time ago and it has turned out as you see, I have a large pot full of them.  With very best love I remain forever affectionate & dutiful son.  John H. Arkwright.  (Annotated in pencil = Lachenalia tricolor [flowers]  Also annotated with "46" for the date sent.)
