The seller of the letter believed the stated location of Springville was in New York. The Hungerford oriented sentences state "I received your letter last Wednesday the day John Hungerford's mother was buried she had been to the City with her husband when he went after goods & took the Typhus Fever. She wasn't sick but a short time." The burial day works out to be 17 May 1865.

Other names mentioned are Harriet, Dr. Beach, Mr. Sheeney, Olin, Erasmus, Kate Newton, Dr. Shelley, Mr. Porter, Mr. Tuttle, and Hattie.

The identities of the Hungerford family members mentioned in this letter have not been determined.
