    • The Quarterly Quiz Answer:

Last Quarter pertained to Eric Henry Holdich-Hungerford (UNEN1192) 22 Jan 1915 apparently in England - 24 Jan 2003 apparently in England and Eric Vincent a.k.a Eric Henry Holdich-Hungerford (UNEN1286) born about 1931 apparently in England. We asked who are they and how are they related to the Holdich families and Hungerford families? No one proposed and answer.

    • The Quarterly Quiz:

The subject of this Quiz is a woman who was a descendant of Mary Hungerford 5th Baroness Botreaux  (EN41) and Edward Hastings. She was the daughter of a baronet who was the grandson of an Earl and his wife the daughter and co-heiress of another Earl who had been imprisoned for treason.

A celebrated beauty, she moved to London alone in her early teens and acquired a licentious reputation well before her twentieth birthday. There was a rumor that she was the “concubine” of an Earl who died during the first quarter of the seventeenth century, who had children by her, and settled upon her an annuity of a significant sum each year.

Subsequently she secretly married a celebrated scientist and adventurer who, when the Earl or his heir withheld her annuity, sued for it and won. The secrecy of the marriage is speculated to have been potential disapproval by both their parents and a fear that her father might leave her out of his will. In reality, the secrecy of their marriage for its first few years probably contributed to her reputation and the fact that some sources still inaccurately refer to her as a “courtesan.” She was a devout Catholic, heard Mass daily, and prayed for at least several hours a day. She also joined a lay Franciscan group and visited the poor in London. She founded her charity work through a gambling habit, with unusually good luck at the card table and a scheme to save up her profits.

      Who was this woman?

    • The Quarterly Mystery:

This Quarter’s Quarterly Mystery  concerns Mildred Anna Hungerford (SH849a). She married John Stanley Kuwaski on 25 Aug 1931 according to the New York Times of that same date. The 1924 New Bedford, Massachusetts City Directory lists his name as “John S Kuwaski” at page 529. Kuwaski is found in the 1930 United States Federal Census indicating that he was born in Massachusetts and that both of his parents were born in Poland.

Mildred and John had four children: Sally Ann Cook (US4933 1938-2021), Catherine Mary Cook (US4932 ), Marie Cook (US4934), and John S. Cook (US4935). We know very little about any of those children, the only information we’ve found having come from Sally Ann’s obituary.

Mildred’s obituary refers to Kuwaski as John Cook.

Perhaps he changed his name from Kuwaski to Cook?

Perhaps he did that because he was Polish?

We have found no documentation of his name change and we have no other information either him or his children? Can you explain the change in names providing documentation for the change?
