  • Answer to Last Quarter's Quarterly Quiz: No one answered last quarter’s Quarterly Quiz. We asked about a Hungerford cousin of ours who was an English peer, aristocrat, and Earl who was born at the family seat in Hampshire, England.

Educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge, he married the illegitimate daughter of a millionaire in Westminster. He was exceedingly wealthy due to his marriage settlement and was at first best known as an owner of racehorses and a reckless driver of early cars. He was an enthusiastic amateur archeologist. He was an enthusiastic amateur Egyptologist. He and his wife bought antiquities for their collection in England. He died from a mosquito bite which became infected.

The answer is George Edward Stanhope Molyneux Herbert (EN3810), 5th Earl of Carnarvon.

  • This Quarter's Quarterly Quiz: The subject of this Quarterly Quiz is a second cousin twice removed from Queen Elizabeth II. She has been singing throughout her acting career that began at age 16. She began her dancing career at age 19 in one of Andrew Lloyd Weber’s productions. She has numerous television and stage credits as an actress. An accomplished singer, she has been described as a brunette Marilyn Monroe possessing the physical embodiment of Betty Boop and the epitome of a 1940s-1950s songstress.

She has sung at Buckingham Palace and The Royal Albert Hall. She also has sung regularly at the United Kingdom’s top Jazz venue. She has travelled the world from Switzerland to the Philippines to Paris expanding the world of Jive, Jazz and Swing music.

She also is an actress performing on film and even wrote the theme song for one movie in the course of developing her own music.

Can you tell us who she is?

  • Answer to Last Quarter's Quarterly Mystery: Last Quarter’s Quarterly Mystery concerned Walter de Hungerford (EN1) and Maud de Heytesbury who we discussed on the first page of that newsletter. They might also have had a third son Thomas de Hungerforde (UNEN543) who is listed once in The Wiltshire Tax List of 1332. Robert Hungerford (EN3) is listed in The Wiltshire Tax List of 1332 three times. We asked what are the chances that Thomas de Hungerforde (UNEN543) and Robert Hungerford (EN3) were brothers and can you resolve this riddle? No one proposed an answer.

  • This Quarter's Quarterly Mystery: This Quarter’s Quarterly Mystery concerns Joy Hungerford who is said to be the daughter of Bertram Vivian Bowden, Baron Bowden (18 Jan 1910 - 31 Jul 1989) in an image published 11 Feb 1926 in the Derbyshire Times.

Lord Bowden was born in 1910, so it seems improbable that he had a daughter identifying herself as such in 1926. Lord Bowden had three children, all born in the 1940s. Moreover, a search for her has failed to uncover anyone who could fit this description.

    Who is Joy Hungerford?
