Alanson Stewart Appleton corrects erroneous information published previously with respect to earlier owners of property located at State and Washington Streets in Chicago, Illinois. He states that "It was reported that General Stewart Purchased this property and paid for it in land scrip. This is not the fact. The land was originally purchased by Mrs. Mary Catharine Sanger - the mother of Mrs. George M. Pullman, whose husband, James Young Sanger, was with General Stewart and my grandfather, Alanson Stewart, contractors for the Illinois and Michigan Canal. * * * General Stewart at that time resided immediately north of this property, and ... the General succeeded in inducing Mrs. Sanger to sell the land to him...."
