Purchased on eBay on 6 Aug 2013. THFFI conducted a Facebook request on the Hungerford sites as to what the first initial was and below is the back and forth.
Carol Hungerford-Courtaway - The L is very similar,
Richard W Hungerford Jr - Carol Hungerford-Courtaway good point--I assumed it was an "S." but it just as easily be an "L."
A.J. Hungerford - Abigail
Richard W Hungerford Jr - Have you seen that abbreviation used elsewhere?
A.J. Hungerford - Richard W Hungerford Jr Maybe.
Tiffany Steffen - I saw it as Missal S. Hungerford
Richard W Hungerford Jr - Tiffany Steffen Missal? Is that a known name?
Carol Hungerford-Courtaway - Richard W Hungerford Jr Miss aL S Hungerford
Tiffany Steffen - Richard W Hungerford Jr no but that’s just what I see. They ran out of ink after Miss and then added more and it looks Like ‘al’
Richard W Hungerford Jr - Looks like you two were correct.
Carol Hungerford-Courtaway - He couldn't remember which one, maybe forgot the rest of her name ??
Richard W Hungerford Jr - Eureka! I thought to check the 1870 Federal Census record for Virginia and low and behold there is an Almore Hungerford, daughter of Henry and Alfonza Adalaide Hungerford in Richmond. She is only 5 but the name seems to connect her or her mom (Al for Alfonza? Middle initial "L." for (per Wikipedia) Nickname(s), Addie, Della, Aida, Lainey, Adele, Delly, Leda, Adela, and Aley.)
