My dear John.
Firstly--I hope you are in, or near, your full strength again-- Now, as to new J. P.s in this district, of whom we spoke. One--Lt. Col. / Army Doctor Corban, w[oul]d be very unacceptable on our Bench. He is a Tenant in his house, & has no claim whatever for the Magistrary except having supported the Primrose League when near Hereford. He does not live

on full terms with many of the gentry!--
& _________ lives in my Village. His house is understood to be for sale. He purchased it about 2 years ago for 2000 pounds. He has since lost income, & is now living in a very small way. I refrain from particulars, but I think you will agree that it is not a case for making a man a County Magistrate, though I am not speaking against him as a man.--
There are several gentle=man in large houses in the neighbourhood

who would consider themselves passed over were either I have named appointed.
Lt. Col. Thomas has pur=chased overross, & would be readily received on our Bench. In fact I had recommended him to L[or]d Bateman, who w[oul]d have appointed him--He will be quite enough for us-- There are 4 Magistrates resident in Ross- one 'ex officio'--
Dr. Bargrave Wyborn lives at Whitechurch / 6 miles from those quarters.

The only gentleman I can find to speak of him (he does not know him as a neighbour) says he is a 'regular Boun-er' & no one w[oul]d think of appointing Him?!--
We have a very pleasant & well met Bench at Ross, & sh[oul]d be sorry to have it spoiled. I speak for the others of Cosvose as well as for myself as Chairman. Of course this is for your ears--Bateman used to act without giving reasons. Solicitors sometimes get their clients recommended for their own interests!
Believe me dear John,
Your aff[ect]i[tion]ate Uncle
