    • The Quarterly Quiz Answer

    • The Quarterly Quiz: A certain “Lady of the Bedchamber” was perhaps the most notorious mistress kept by any King of England. She was reputed to be generous with her young lovers by supporting them with money that she received from the King. A certain gentleman who would become a duke was in bed with her once when the King dropped by unexpectedly. Her lover jumped out a window, the King walked to the window, and the king told the him that he forgave him because he only made love to her for the money.

Her jilted lover subsequently demanded five thousand pounds and that she make love to Sir ____ Hungerford who had expressed the desire to be where the King had been previously. She told Sir ____ Hungerford that her fee would be ten thousand pounds (she wanted to keep “a little extra” for herself). Hungerford agreed to the fee but she duped him by sending another woman to meet him in a dark room and collect the payment.

She told Hungerford about her subterfuge and offered herself to him again for another ten thousand pounds which he declined after coming to his senses.

    • The Quarterly Mystery Answer: Last Quarter’s Quarterly Mysteryconcerned Joy Hungerford who was said to be the daughter of Bertram Vivian Bowden, Baron Bowden (18 Jan 1910 - 31 Jul 1989) in an image published 11 Feb 1926 in the Derbyshire Times. Lord Bowden was born in 1910, so it seemed improbable that he had a daughter identifying herself as such in 1926. We asked who is Joy Hungerford? No one proposed an answer.

    • The Quarterly Mystery: pertains to Eric Henry Holdich-Hungerford (UNEN1192) 22 Jan 1915 apparently in England - 24 Jan 2003 apparently in England and Eric Vincent a.k.a Eric Henry Holdich-Hungerford (UNEN1286) born about 1931 apparently in England.

Eric (UNEN1192) was raised with half-siblings, only later using his real surname. Before WW2 he worked on a farm and then served in France as a Gunner in the Royal Regiment of Artillery sustaining wounds when his ship HMS Jaguar was bombed. While convalescing in Oxford, he saw a vehicle from his regiment drive by, collected his kit, and re-joined, serving in North Africa and the Western Desert with the 8th Army. After the War he worked as a film librarian and in the motor trade. He married Joyce E. Thorp Jan 1948, lived at 30 Western Avenue, Welland Gardens, Ealing, London, England for many years, and had 4 children and 4 grandchildren, names unknown to us. He became a Chelsea Pensioner in 1989 and suffered from Parkinson’s disease.

And then we have this: a Notice published in the 10 Jun 1947 edition of The London Gazette: “a natural born ‘British subject of 16,’ The Warren, Heston in the county of Middlesex (lately called Eric Vincent) has assumed and intends henceforth and upon all occasions and at all times to assume and ‘be called by the name of Eric Henry Holdich-Hungerford in lieu of and in substitution for his former name of Eric Vincent.’”

We have no other information about those people. Who are they and how are they related to the Holdich families and Hungerford families?
