This is the first quarter, 2018 THFFI Newsletter, The Hungerford World Tree.

In This Issue:

  • Website update: As we go to print, the number of entries in our database have increased significantly since our last newsletter: the 61,296 individual profiles have increased to 64,882, the 39,897 marriage records have increased to 42,107, the 5,813 photographs have increased to 6,527, and the 2,849 Library entries have increased to 3,173.

  • We have added a new feature to the website: a Surnames Index. The Index lists every surname in the database. Each surname is linked to a page with a list of all persons in the data-base with that surname. Each name is linked, in turn, to the profile for that person. There are 9,095 surnames in the database as of the date of this writing.

  • The Hungerford and Associated Families Society: Our Hungerford cousins in Australia comprising the Hungerford and Associated Families Society have launched a new website. We review their new site briefly.

  • Craig Gauger: We welcome Craig Gauger to the THFFI Board of Trustees.

  • Paula J. Wynne Hungerford: We profile Paula J. Wynne Hungerford, winner of the Meadowlark Award.

  • The Quarterly Nugget: We present some “gold” that we unearthed in the form of several records from the 1360s telling us about one (or two) previously-unknown (to us) William Hungerfords.

  • The Many Thomas Hungerfords: We supplement our article in the last newsletter, where we reviewed Canon Jackson’s references to Thomas Hungerford in the Jackson Papers.

  • The Many William Hungerfords Documented before 1400: We have transcribed the “Earliest Notices of the Hungerford Family, in Various Counties” from Canon Jackson’s papers. Our transcription is attached at the end of this newsletter.

  • The References to William Hungerford Documented before 1400: We review our findings about the William de Hungerfords mentioned in our Quarterly Nugget and those “Earliest Notices.”

  • Another Aside About ‘Sources’ & The Need to Exercise Great Caution: We fol-low up on the discussion in our 3rd Quarter 2017 newsletter regarding the relative weight to give the Hungerford Cartulary and the Jackson Papers versus the weight given to works published by the British Government such as the Calendar of the Patent Rolls. This time we report about a document that has been reproduced in the Hungerford Cartulary and the Calendar of the Patent Rolls but each of those sources containing different text from one another.

  • Notable Library Additions: Several notable books and vital records have been added to the Library. We list the most important of them for you.

  • Website Tips: We offer more tips for using the THFFI website databases.

  • Obituaries: We include a few obituaries of Hungerfords who passed away recently:

    • Gerald S. Hungerford (US15049),

    • Felice Hungerford (US435spouse1),

    • Robert Allen Hungerford (SH1335),

    • Susan Carol Hungerford, and

    • Petronilla “Pat” Hungerford (SH1399spouse2).

  • Answer To & Winner of the Last Quarterly Quiz.

  • The Quarterly Quiz: This quiz asks you whether you know who wrote a story about an attack by wild pigs during the Vietnam War?

  • Answer To & Winner of the Last Quarterly Mystery.

  • The Quarterly Mystery: This question revisits our dilemma discussed in our review of the various William de Hungerfords from the 1360s and asks whether we have two different people by the name William de Hungerford in the excerpt dated 10 Feb 1368 or whether we have just one William de Hungerford mentioned twice?

  • Calling for Quiz and Mystery Questions. Do you have ideas for a quarterly quiz or mystery question? Send us your ideas so that we can introduce your ideas to the larger Hungerford community and perhaps even break down your Hungerford brick walls.

  • Calling all volunteers: We could use your help. Would you like to be a member of the Board of Trustees or an officer? Perhaps you are skilled in website development?

  • Questions? Suggestions? We want to hear from you.

  • The THFFI Board of Trustees.

  • The THFFI Mission Statement.
