Richard W. Hungerford Sr. took photos just before he left for Vietnam, while he was stationed at Cam Ranh Bay, and on his R&R with his wife Barbara in Japan that are housed here. (Un-numbered photos were taken by a third party as were some of the numbered pictures if he is in the photo.) There was one specific little boy he had gone out of his way to help—probably saved his life as I understand it. Regarding this little boy--shown here--the parents gave my father a Vietnamese crossbow (which I’ve personally seen) and a letter written by them in both English and Vietnamese (I was told) that thanked him profusely. He taught the boy how to feed himself by the unpleasant means of a tube down your nose when the initial effort was thwarted by infection requiring his jaw be wired shut. This involved a lot of visits as the infection was stubborn. Visits were dangerous. The Viet Cong were still prevalent then. They might kill you for your gun. My father (Dr. Richard W. Hungerford Sr. – US25) never took his gun for that reason he told me.
