This is the fourth quarter, 2017 THFFI Newsletter, The Hungerford World Tree.

In This Issue:

  • Website update: As we go to print, our database has 61,296 individual profiles, 39,897 marriage records, 5,813 photographs, and 2,849 Library entries.

  • Garrett Boyd Hungerford: Correction of an error in our last newsletter.

  • Nicholas de Hungerford: We profile Nicholas de Hungerford, prior of St. Frideswide, Oxford from 1349 to 1370 and an “out and out scoundrel!.”

  • Medieval Fairs: Since Medieval Fairs provide the backdrop for our discussion of Nicholas de Hungerford, we provide an overview of their importance to commerce during the middle ages.

  • Book Review: The Merchant’s Tale: We review Ann Swinfen’s marvelous historical novel in which she provides an accurate description of the defining events in the life of Nicholas de Hungerford during the period from shortly before commencement of the St. Frideswide Fair that began October 19, 1349 and ended around October 26.

  • Nicholas de Hungerford: The Documentary Record: We summarize the original records documenting what we know about Nicholas de Hungerford.

  • The Quarterly Nugget: We present some “gold” that we unearthed in the form of a record from 1265 telling us about a previously-unknown (to us) Hungerford.

  • Thomas Hungerford, the Hungerford Cartulary & The Jackson Papers: We supplement our article in the last newsletter, reviewing several Thomas Hungerfords who we uncovered subsequently. We review Canon Jackson’s references to Thomas Hungerford in the Jackson Papers in this newsletter.

  • An Aside About Sources & The Need to Exercise Great Caution: We are reminded that the Hungerford Cartulary Volumes I and II, the Jackson Papers, and published volumes such as the Calendar of Patent Rolls all are secondary sources that must be used with caution.

  • Sir Thomas Hungerford (EN5): Not the First Speaker of the House of Commons: During our review of Canon Jackson’s papers, we find ample evidence that Sir Thomas Hungerford was not the first Speaker of the House of Commons and statements to the contrary are pure myth.

  • Notable Library Additions: Several notable books and vital records have been added to the Library. We list the most important of them for you.

  • Website Tips: We offer more tips for using the THFFI website databases.

  • Obituaries: We include a few obituaries of Hungerfords who passed away recently:

    • Denise Gail (Ovitt) Cuccolo (the daughter of THFFI member Gary Ovitt and his wife Julia Stearns),

    • William James “Flip” Hungerford,

    • Lillian “Chili Lili” Valera Hungerford, and

    • Doris Olive Hungerford Snodgrass.

  • Answer To & Winner of the Last Quarterly Quiz.

  • The Quarterly Quiz: This quiz asks you whether you know the name of the Hungerford who caught a shark with his bare hands?

  • Answer To & Winner of the Last Quarterly Mystery.

  • The Quarterly Mystery: This question asks whether Thomas de Hungerford UNEN606 who, in 1303 and 1306, was parson of the church of Kynardeseye is the same person as Thomas de Hungerford UNEN594 who, in 1300, was chaplain and King’s attorney for two years.
