This is the third quarter, 2017 THFFI Newsletter, The Hungerford World Tree.

In This Issue:

  • Website update: As we go to print, our database has 58,867 individual profiles, 38,453 marriage records, 5,171 photographs, and 2,448 Library entries.

  • Garrett Boyd Hungerford: We introduce a man who takes his Hungerford ancestry seriously with a large tattoo. .

  • Del Hungerford: we profile Delores “Del” Ann Hungerford, a professional musician and author of … but words will never hurt me, a story of overcoming abuse.

  • A Little Conundrum: We present a little puzzle that we found while researching this quarter’s issue. The conundrum involves “Walter de Hungerford,” who in 1336 was the “late escheator” Walter, in 1341 was the “feeble” Coroner Walter, and in 1346 was the “insufficiently qualified” Coroner Walter. We answer the question: are these people all the same Walter Hungerford?

  • Acknowledgments: We acknowledge suggestions for content that we received from a variety of sources.

  • Thomas Hungerford, the Hungerford Cartulary & The Jackson Papers: We respond to an email from Lesley Jane Abrahams commenting on the article in our last newsletter about Thomas Hungerford (UNEN543). In response, we review the several Thomas Hungerfords who we uncovered subsequently. We will review Canon Jackson’s references to Thomas Hungerford in the Jackson Papers in our next newsletter.

  • An Aside About Sources & The Need to Exercise Great Caution: We discuss the relative weight to give the Hungerford Cartulary and the Jackson Papers versus the weight given to works published by the British Government such as the Calendar of Patent Rolls.

  • A Correction About Use of The Jackson Papers: We summarize our communications with the Bodleian Library regarding THFFI use of the Jackson Papers and their telling us that the restrictions in the microfilm on use of the images (described in our last Newsletter) is an error and does not apply to THFFI use of those images.

  • The Wiltshire Archaeological & Natural History Society: We describe our new collaboration with the Wiltshire Archaeological & Natural History Society and their having placed a link on their website to the Jackson Papers in the THFFI Library. We also describe an initiative to place in the THFFI Library digitized copies of the numerous other Hungerford-related mate-rials in their archives.

  • THFFI Treatment of Information About Living People: Following our article in the last newsletter about this topic, concerns were raised about identity theft. The THFFI Board met to discuss the concerns and determine whether a modification of the THFFI policy was warranted. We review the Board decision.

  • Notable Library Additions: Several no-table books and vital records have been added to the Library. We list the most im-portant of them for you.

  • Website Tips: We offer more tips for using the THFFI website databases.

  • Obituaries: We include a few obituaries of Hungerfords who passed away recently. We present the obituaries2 of Karen Jean Hungerford (SH1311wife), sister-in-law of Stan Hungerford, Orison Whipple Hungerford, Jr. (SH1429, better known as Ty Hardin, the movie and television actor), and Mary Elizabeth Hungerford (US6025wife).

  • Answer To & Winner of the Last Quarterly Quiz.

  • The Quarterly Quiz: This quiz asks you whether you know the name of the Hungerford who married a cousin of a U.S. President? And who was that U.S. President?

  • Answer To & Winner of the Last Quarterly Mystery.

  • The Quarterly Mystery: This question is about John Hungerford, Rector of St. Giles Church, Merston, Sussex, England from 1549 to 1554.

  • Calling for Quiz and Mystery Questions. Do you have ideas for a quarterly quiz or mystery question? Send us your ideas so that we can introduce your ideas to the larger Hungerford community and perhaps even break down your Hungerford brick walls.

  • Questions? Suggestions? We want to hear from you.
