This is the second quarter, 2017 THFFI Newsletter, The Hungerford World Tree.

In This Issue:

  • Website update: A momentous addition to the website is our digitization and placement of the “Jackson Papers” in the Library. As we go to print, the database has 55,120 individual profiles, 35,893 marriage records, 4,519 photographs, and 1,757 Library entries.

  • Acknowledgments: we receive suggestions for content from a variety of sources. Lesley Jane Abrahams, in particular, has been most helpful and yet we have been derelict in acknowledging her contributions. We redress that failure and more.

  • The Hungerford Cartulary: A Calendar of the Earl of Radnor’s Cartulary of the Hungerford Family: We describe briefly this incredible document comprising 700 private deeds or charters, 63 royal charters, letters patent or writs, 54 final concords, inquisitions post mortem, 31 pleas or proceedings in court, a few bonds, receipts for money, petitions, and statements of homage, and two pedigrees (of the Montfort lords of Farleigh, and the ancestors of Walter Hungerford) (EN1 ranging from about 1150 to 1468.

  • The Hungerford Cartulary, Part 2: A Calendar of the Hobhouse Cartulary of the Hungerford Family: We describe briefly this incredible document, as well.

  • The Wiltshire Tax List of 1332: We discuss four Hungerford entries, three entries for Robert Hungerford (EN3) and one entry for Thomas Hungerford (UNEN543), apparently a previously-unknown Hungerford from the late 1200s to early 1300s.

  • Thomas Hungerford UNEN543 and The Radnor Cartulary: We discuss briefly the discovery that there might have been a previously-unknown Thomas Hungerford (UNEN543), a discovery that arises from close examination of several dozen deeds from 1316-1429.

  • The “Jackson Papers:” We have digitized our microfilm of the Research papers of Canon J. E. Jackson M.A., F.S.A. Relating to the Hungerford Family. We tell you about the Reverend Jackson and describe this material briefly, all of which has been added to the Library.

  • Kathryn “Katie” Reich: (LM581 in the THFFI Surnames Database) is the first person to apply for, and be awarded, a THFFI scholarship. We present her qualifications and discuss her application. We also discuss her appointment as a THFFI intern as she pursues her career goal of being a communications director of a nonprofit organization.

  • THFFI policies re: use of copyrighted material and treatment of information about living people: Some folks have expressed concern about THFFI use of copyrighted material and the treatment of information about living people. We explain our policies in light of our objectives and the laws in the United States governing those policies.

  • Website tips: with this issue, we offer more tips for using the THFFI website databases.

  • Lady Anne Monson: (née Vane We thank Stan Hungerford (SH1310) for all of the information that he provided us for our profile of Lady Anne (Vane) Monson (EN939) (1726–1776), an English botanist and collector of plants and insects after whom the genus Monsonia was named.

  • Jane Hungerford, O.B.C. (née Vallance Jane Florence Dimsdale Knott), is the wife of George William Hungerford (IR193). We profile Jane Hungerford, a recipient of the Order of British Columbia (O.B.C).

  • Other Significant Hungerfords: We profile several other Canadian Hungerfords of note.

  • National Genealogical Society News-letter Competition: The National Genealogical Society recognizes excellence in the genealogy field by presenting awards in numerous categories and several competitions. THFFI was awarded an Honorable Mention as runner-up in the competition in the Family Association Newsletter category.

  • Answer to & winner of the last Quarterly Quiz.

  • The Quarterly Quiz: This quiz asks you whether you know who wrote “…whenever he was drunk told all he knew, and when he was sober, more than he knew.” Who wrote those words? And who was the person referenced in that description? We know the answer, do you? If so, be the first to give us the answer and have your name added to our Winners Circle.

  • Answer to & winner of the last Quarterly Mystery.

  • The Quarterly Mystery: This question is about Sergeant W. C. Hungerford, the Canadian gentleman who received the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal. Do you know who he was? We don’t know the answer, do you? If so, be the first to solve it, win a Hungerford mug, and have your name added to our Winners Circle.

  • Calling for Quiz and Mystery Questions. Do you have ideas for a quarterly quiz or mystery question? Send us your ideas so that we can introduce your ideas to the larger Hungerford community and perhaps even break down your Hungerford brick walls.

  • Calling all volunteers: We could use your help. Would you like to be a member of the Board of Trustees or an officer? Perhaps you are skilled in website development?

  • Questions? Suggestions? We want to hear from you.
